Rome Fiumicino Airport
Rome Fiumicino Airport, also known as Leonardo Da Vinci Intercontinental Airport, is located at about 30 km west from Rome city centre and it is one of the biggest airports in Italy, hosting national and international flights.
The construction of this airport dates back to 1947, when the Italian Govern decided to equip the Capital city with a new airport, to face the increasing air traffic and to enhance the services already offered by Ciampino Airport.
Construction works began in 1958 and lasted about 21 months. They led to the discovery of the remains of 5 ships of Roman age, which are preserved in the Museum of Roman ships in Fiumicino, that was opened in 2002.
Currently equipped with 5 terminals, Fiumicino Airport is the hub of Alitalia and of the low-cost airline Vueling and it hosts about 40 million passengers every year.
From Rome city centre you can easily reach this airport driving on the highway A91. At only 15 km from the airport you can get to the ring road (Highway A90), from where you can go to all Rome’s quarters.
Rome city centre: a sequence of attractions
Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the biggest municipality in Italy and the fourth most populous one in Europe. The city is rich in marvellous places that tell the important Italian history.
Its old town is enclosed within the Aurelian and Janiculum walls, respectively on the left and on the right side of River Tiber.
One of the most beautiful areas in Rome is called by the Romans “il Tridente” and includes the three main roads which extends from Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Venezia: via del Babuino, via del Corso and via di Ripetta.
Along these roads you can find the principal fashion boutiques, admire the beautiful Piazza di Spagna, jewel of the Roman Baroque and enriched by the monumental staircase of Trinità dei Monti and by the Bernini’s fountain Barcaccia.
The large Rome city centre also includes the beautiful Villa Borghese, considered one of the ten most beautiful urban parks in Europe. The enormous park is often animated by cultural events and allows you to enjoy fantastic relaxing moments at the garden of the lake or to visit Fontana dei Cavalli Marini, Orologio dell’Acqua and the important Galleria Borghese.
You can move among the various Rome’s districts renting a car, previously booked online on RentalUp, once landed at Rome Fiumicino Airport, and drive to the main attractions.
3 important monuments in Rome
If you have planned a short vacation in the Italian capital city, it will not be easy to admire all its beauties in a few days, because of the enormous cultural, historical and artistic heritage which the city flaunts.
However, you cannot miss a visit at the majestic and suggestive Colosseum, one of the symbols of Rome, which express its major charm at sunset time.
The Colosseum, also known as Anfiteatro Flavio, is the biggest amphitheatre in the world and the most majestic monument of the Ancient Rome that has come down to our days.
One of the most beautiful monuments in Rome is Fontana di Trevi, a jewel of the last Baroque, made by travertine, marble, plaster, filler and metals. Fontana di Trevi went down in history also for the famous scene of Fellini’s movie “La Dolce Vita”, in which Anita Ekberg dips into the fountain.
Between Fontana di Trevi and the Colosseum, you can admire the majestic Vittoriano, in Piazza Venezia, also known as Altare della Patria, that is placed on Campidoglio hill.
