In Largo da Matriz you can admire the pretty church of São Sebastiao, realized in Manueline style with calcareous rock. In the nearby, there is Praça 5 de Outubro with the Forte de São Bràs, a fortress of Renaissance origin.
In Ponta Delgada, at the big Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, on the fifth Sunday after Easter important celebrations in honour of Santo Cristo dos Milagres are organised. During the procession a statue of Christ dressed in red and adorned with precious golden jewels and diamonds is carried throughout the city. During the rest of the year, you can admire the statue at the museum of the convent, with other religious treasures, relics and votive jewels.
