If you love hiking, you can commit on your favourite sport along trails following ridges and craters or in the nature parks of the island.
Ponta Dalgada: what to see
The many churches with an imposing architecture, the white houses with coloured decors and the long cobbled streets narrate the glorious past of Ponta Delgada, very important for the trade traffics between Europe and America.
The beating heart of this city is Praçade Goncalo Velho Cabral, a square with big arches, towards the sea, that originally was the gateway to the town.
In Largo da Matriz you can admire the pretty church of São Sebastiao, realized in Manueline style with calcareous rock. In the nearby, there is Praça 5 de Outubro with the Forte de São Bràs, a fortress of Renaissance origin.
In Ponta Delgada, at the big Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, on the fifth Sunday after Easter important celebrations in honour of Santo Cristo dos Milagres are organised. During the procession a statue of Christ dressed in red and adorned with precious golden jewels and diamonds is carried throughout the city. During the rest of the year, you can admire the statue at the museum of the convent, with other religious treasures, relics and votive jewels.
The car rental service at Ponta Delgada Airport will allow you to visit this and other marvels, such as the Museu Carlos Machado, in the former convent of Santo André, where many objects related to fisheries and agriculture, main source of livelihood of the island, are exhibited. The paintings by Domingos Rebelo, portraying scenes from common life in the Azores and the wing dedicated to the natural history are very interesting, too.
