Car rental in Flevoland: land created by humans

Flevoland is the youngest and most surprising province of the Netherlands: it does not exist on maps from before 1986. It is a land entirely created by humans, snatched from the sea through monumental drainage works that transformed the former Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer lake and the surrounding polders.

Today Flevoland is a region of geometric landscapes, with straight roads, cultivated fields stretching to the horizon and modern villages built on the drained seabed. With a rental car you can fully appreciate the uniqueness of this engineering feat.

Lelystad, the provincial capital, hosts the Batavia Stad outlet centre, the Batavia ship (a 1620 East India Company replica) and the New Land Heritage Centre, dedicated to the history of the polders. Almere, the youngest city in the country, is a laboratory of contemporary urbanism.

Nature and history in Flevoland

Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve is one of the most exciting wildlife areas in Europe: a 5,600-hectare wetland inhabited by herds of wild horses (Konik), red deer and Heck cattle, plus thousands of birds. Marked trails and observation hides allow safari-like excursions, a few kilometres from the Amsterdam ring road.

Schokland, the former drained island, is now a UNESCO heritage site: museums and the village centre tell of the centuries-old struggle of the inhabitants against the sea. Urk, the former fishing island today connected to the mainland by the Noordoostpolder, retains its identity with the maritime museum, traditional costumes and the smoked herring port.

Lelystad Airport, the country's secondary airport, opens onto a province ideal for non-mass-tourism itineraries. The Noordoostpolder, with the longest tulip route in the Netherlands in spring, offers a unique view of fields of every colour. Bataviastad outlet and the modern Walibi Holland amusement park complete a province dedicated to families and to those who love discovering something new.
