São Miguel: Sete Cidades, Furnas and the north coast
Lagoa das Sete Cidades, with its two lakes (one green, one blue) separated by a bridge, is the iconic image of the Azores. It lies about 25 km from Ponta Delgada and is best reached by car with a breathtaking view from the Vista do Rei viewpoint. To the east, the Furnas area is a landscape from another planet: a lake at the bottom of a caldera, fumaroles steaming among the bushes, and the famous cozido das Furnas cooking underground for hours, slow-cooked by the geothermal heat. Heading west from Ponta Delgada you reach the village of Mosteiros, famous for its black volcanic islets just off the coast and the spectacular sunsets. To the south coast, the surf beach of Lagoa and the marina of Vila Franca do Campo — with its perfectly round volcanic islet — are easy detours along the main southern road.
