Car rental El Hierro Airport
The El Hierro Airport (VDE) is located in the northeastern part of the island, the smallest and most remote of the Canaries. The airport serves inter-island flights from Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and represents the only air access to this extraordinary island.
El Hierro is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Geopark, a volcanic island of just 269 square kilometers where nature is the absolute protagonist. With only 11,000 inhabitants, it is the first island in the world to operate almost entirely on renewable energy thanks to the hydro-wind plant of Gorona del Viento. Car rental in El Hierro is practically essential: there is no adequate public transport and the attractions are distributed across the entire island. Compare rates on Tino Rent and prepare for a one-of-a-kind experience.

What to see in El Hierro by rental car
The island is compact but offers unique attractions reachable only by rental car. The Garoe tree, a laurel sacred to the ancient Bimbache inhabitants that condensed water from the mist, is in the inland. The Mirador de la Pena, designed by Lanzarote artist Cesar Manrique, offers a vertiginous view of the Valle del Golfo and the sea. The natural pools of La Maceta and Charco Azul, volcanic pools of turquoise water protected from the waves, are perfect for tranquil swims.
The Marine Reserve of La Restinga, in the south of the island, is one of the best diving sites in Europe with crystal-clear waters and volcanic seabeds rich in marine life. The village of Pozo de las Calcosas, with its stone houses built by fishermen, seems frozen in time. El Hierro was considered for centuries the westernmost point of the known world: the Faro de Orchilla marks the ancient zero meridian.

Tips for driving in El Hierro
The roads of El Hierro are narrow and winding but well paved. The island can be fully traveled in a few hours, but the elevation changes are remarkable: you go from sea level to over 1,500 meters of altitude in a few kilometers, crossing different climatic zones from the arid coast to the laurisilva forest. A small car is sufficient, but a vehicle with good climbing pickup is recommended.
Don't miss the millennial juniper forest at El Sabinar, where the trees are bent by the wind into surreal shapes, and the Frontera forest, shrouded in mist as in a fantasy film. Car hire in El Hierro is the best way to experience this authentic island, away from mass tourism and dedicated to sustainability.
