    Split: the most interesting attractions

Once easily reached the city thanks to the rental car service available at Split Airport, you can park your rental car in the functional parking areas right outside the old town and continue on foot to discover the history, art and culture of this city that still preserves its ancient beauty.

The origins of Split date back to the Greek age; between 295 AD and 305 AD Emperor Diocletian ordered to build a majestic palace that is one of the biggest monuments preserved until nowadays.

The palace overlooks the sea and it was built according to the Roman military architecture, the castrum. The dimensions are amazing: the whole city of Split has been developed inside the Diocletian Palace, which is a unique jewel in the world, recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO.

There are four entrance gates (Golden, Silver, Iron, Bronze) situated at the four cardinal points. Upon the northern one you can admire the majestic statue of Gregor of Nin, the bishop who first used the Croatian language during the liturgy.

Taking as reference points the four gates, you can visit the most interesting attractions such as the Chapel of Arnir, the Church of Saint Martin, the Papalic Palace, the Temple of Jupiter, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and the Temples of Venus and Cybele.

There are also many museums in the city. Inside the Papalic Palace there is the Civic Museum, with many interesting archaeological findings and writings that witness the history of the Byzantine and Venetian Split.

You cannot miss a visit to the treasure that is preserved into the Cathedral and the Ethnographic Museum, hosted in the Town Hall Palace, where you can admire a great collection of objects and pictures that retrace the local traditions and culture. Right in the old town, west of the Diocletian Palace, there is the Archaeological Museum, the most ancient one in Croatia, which collects findings of Neolithic, Roman, Byzantine and medieval ages, that were found in the palace and in the surrounding areas.
