Bari Palese Airport Car Rental
Bari Palese Airport is named after the neighborhood where it is located, the district Palese Macchie, 12 km far from the centre of Bari. To get there, you have to take the provincial road no. 73 (known as Viale Europa), that crosses the highway no. 16, which surrounds the south area of Bari centre.
The airport was built in 1934 as a military airport and was dedicated to the Prince Umberto of Savoy. In the same year it was opened also to civil flights with the first connections to Rome, Ancona, Venice and Tirana. The structure was increasingly enlarged until 1965, when the airport terminal was completed. New enlargement works started in 2011. The new airport was named after Karol Wojtyla and can host up to 3,600,000 passengers a year.
Bari Airport is the main airport in Apulia and it is used also by people from Barletta, Andria, Trani, Foggia and Matera.
If you arrive in the Apulian chief town with no car, you could take advantage of the rental car service at Bari airport to visit not only Bari but also the surroundings.
Bari, city of history and sea
Bari is a port city with many attractions. The promenade is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy and it borders both the Adriatic Sea and the lively and frenetic city.
In the heart of the old town, you can admire the two most important buildings of this beautiful city in South Italy: Basilica of San Nicola and the Norman-Swabian Castle. The Basilica is named after San Nicola Archbishop of Myra, to whom the legend of Santa Claus is inspired. Inside the Basilica the remains of the Patron Saint of Bari are preserved and venerated by Catholics and Russian Ortodoxes.
Built in 1089, the Basilica of San Nicola is an excellent example of Romanic style and its interiors captivate visitors thanks to the golden wooden ceilings enriched by paintings of the XVII century, the silver altar and the most ancient ciborium in Apulia, built in 1150.
The Norman-Swabian Castle was built in 1223 by order of Frederick II of Swabia on the old ruins of the castle of 1131 owned by Roger the Norman. This beautiful castle stands on Bari Old Town, protecting the main entrance and dominating the sea. It is equipped with towers, donjons and the surrounding moat.
Bari Old Town, among churches and panoramic views
Bari old town, known as “Old Bari”, is between the old city harbour and the new one. Old Bari is the area of San Nicola and dates back to the Middle Ages. It is a wonderful and picturesque network of alleyways, which allows you to admire the local inhabitants’ life, hanging between tradition and folklore.
It is not rare to spot old women in the doorway of their homes preparing the famous and delicious “orecchiette”, just by using water, flour and knives. Old town houses are huddled to each other and it often happens to come across breathtaking views over the sea.
Bari Sotterranea is really beautiful too: it is a guided tour led at night by expert archaeologists, that allows you to admire the undergrounds of the Norman-Swabian Castle and of the entire old town. You will have the opportunity to discover the traces of the Bronze Age, the Roman Era and of the Byzantine Emperor in the Occident.
