Car rental in Istria: the Croatian peninsula closest to Italy

Istria is the Croatian region most familiar to European travellers: just two hours by road from Trieste, this heart-shaped peninsula retains a strong link with Italian culture. In many villages Italian is still spoken, signs are bilingual and Venetian architecture dominates the historic centres.

With a rental car you can explore the whole peninsula, from coastal towns to the hilltop villages of the hinterland. Pula airport (PUY) is the most convenient point of arrival, but Istria is also easily reachable from Trieste airport or by car from Italy.

Pula boasts an exceptionally preserved Roman amphitheatre, the sixth largest in the world, which still hosts concerts and summer events. Rovinj, with its colourful houses facing the sea and its Venetian bell tower, is considered one of the most romantic little towns on the Adriatic.

Villages, truffles and beaches: Istria to discover by car

The Istrian hinterland is a succession of green hills, vineyards and hilltop medieval villages. Motovun, dominating the Mirna valley, is the capital of the Istrian white truffle, as prized as the one from Alba. Grožnjan, the town of artists, and Motovun are equally striking.

Poreč hosts the Euphrasian Basilica, UNESCO-listed for its 6th-century Byzantine mosaics. The Brijuni Islands, accessible by boat from Fažana, form a national park of rare beauty with Roman ruins and exotic fauna.

Istrian beaches are varied: from the fine gravel of Rabac to the rocky cliffs of Kamenjak park, a promontory at the extreme south where the sea is crystal clear and nature is unspoiled. The western coast, from Umag to Pula, offers some of the clearest waters of the Adriatic. With a rental car you can combine sea, culture and gastronomy in a single day.
