Lamezia Terme Airport
Lamezia Terme Sant’Eufemia Airport is famous for being the most important airport in Calabria and one of the busiest by passengers traffic in South Italy. Its construction started in 1965 and ended in 1976, when it was opened and began to grant connections to Rome, Milan and Sicily.
Over the years Lamezia Terme Airport was increased and renovated, confirming to be the most important airport in the region. Among the cities that you can reach from Lamezia Terme, in addition to the already mentioned ones, there are Bucharest and Ljubljana. You just have to drive a few kilometres to get to Lamezia Terme centre by car from the airport.
Lamezia Terme’s history and main monuments
Lamezia Terme is a newly-founded city: it was indeed born in 1968 from the fusion of the municipalities of Sant’Eufemia, Nicastro and Sambiase. Its name is linked to the river Amato, once named Lametos, and to the Caronte Thermae, not far from the ancient centre of Sambiase.
Lamezia Terme has much to offer from different points of view, starting from the naturalistic one: it is enough to think of Sant’Eufemia Gulf with its 8 kilometres of beaches and many other places where the nature is still unspoilt. Among the historic attractions in this city, we must mention the archaeological site of Sant’Eufemia Vetere: here you can admire the remains of Terina, a city founded in 500 B.C.
The Norman-Swabian Castle is more recent: it dates back to XI century and stands on the hill of San Teodoro, in Nicastro. This building contends with the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul for the title of most important artistic-historic site in the entire Lamezia Terme. Museo Diocesano is worth a mention too: it is the most important museum in the city, with the Archeologico Lametino museum.
Pollino National Park
Among the many places which deserve to be visited in the surroundings of Lamezia Terme, Pollino National Park stands out: it is the biggest protected area in Italy and the pride of this city and of the entire Calabria Region.
Here you can admire a rich vegetation: it is enough to think of the maple trees of Monte Sparviere and of the Bosnian pine; and also the most interesting fauna of the Southern Apennines, such as the wolf, the roe deer, the otter and many species of raptors. Visiting Pollino National Park is a unique experience, especially for those who love immersing themselves in unspoilt and wild nature and admiring heterogeneous landscapes, united by the same extraordinary beauty.
