Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport

From 1995 Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport is named after the two Sicilian magistrates who are a symbol of the fight against mafia, who were killed in two tragic attempts.

It was designed in 1953 to substitute Boccadifalco Airport, which was insufficient to manage the ever-growing passengers traffic. Palermo Airport is nowadays considered the third one in the South of Italy, after Catania and Naples.

It is located in the area of Punta Raisi, in the municipality of Cinisi, which was preferred to the southern area of the city. The airport was inaugurated in 1960, but it was necessary to face several logistical problems, among which a consistent sirocco wind that made the moves of landing and take-off difficult. Important renovating works were made in occasion of the football world cup of 1990.

Among the most active airlines at Palermo Airport there is Alitalia, which grants daily connections to city such as Naples, Rome and Milan. Many low cost airlines work in this airport, granting connections to Spain, Greece and other countries.

The Cathedral of Palermo and Palazzo dei Normanni

Palermo is a city rich in contradictions, famous for some of the saddest pages of the Italian history, but also for important aspects from the points of view of history, art and culture. Influenced since its origins by many different cultures, Palermo flaunts today monuments of unbelievable beauty, results of many artistic-architectonic styles.

The two symbols of Palermo are for sure the Cathedral and Palazzo dei Normanni.

The Cathedral of Palermo is named after Santa Vergine Maria Assunta in Cielo and was built around 1100 on the ruins of Gami Mosque, which dated back to the Byzantine era. Actually, the origins of the church are even more ancient: it was built in the Punic era and transformed to a place of worship in Roman era; then it became a big mosque at the hands of the Byzantines, before being reconstructed by the Normans and the Spanish.

The traces of these different populations are still visible and make this building a symbol of the harmonic mix of different styles, such as, for instance, the Gothic-Catalan and the Baroque. If the Cathedral of Palermo is the most famous house of worship in the whole Sicily, among the secular buildings we have to mention Palazzo dei Normanni, a real flagship of the Sicilian city and a symbol of the power since the origins.

It was the main imperial seat during the empires of Frederick II and Conrad IV and still today it is famous for the Palatina Chapel and for its marvellous mosaics, which make the building one of the most visited in Palermo. The discovering tour of Palermo can continue visiting the underground cemetery of the Convento dei Cappuccini, that is really interesting because of the important figures who were buried here.

The beach of Mondello

To corroborate the beauty of Palermo there is also the wonderful beach of Mondello, which is among the most beautiful beaches not only in the city, but in Italy. It is less than 10 km far from the city centre, hugged by two mountains, Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo.

During the whole year you can enjoy the solitary and wild charm of the beach of Mondello, which in summertime is attended by inhabitants and tourists. The fine and white sand degrades in a turquoise and clear sea with shallow water and it is ideal for kids too.

Those who visit Mondello can not only live a relaxing vacation in this beautiful resort, but also visit the many noble dwellings in Liberty style and have fun in clubs and exclusive circles, that make Mondello one of the trendiest beaches in Palermo.
